This exhibition is to celebrate the life and work of Brian Davies (1942 - 2014). His paintings were inspired by the seventeenth century tradition of Dutch still life or 'nature morte' - he followed in the style of artists such as De Heem, Van der Ast, Heda and Claesz who had changed the medium foreve - painting texture, light and surface in intricate detail and communicating the message of the brevity of life - known as the 'vanitas' theme. Allied to an early interest in Surrealism, it was to these two traditions that Brian dedicated his life's work.
